Five Things to Consider When Investing in a Paver Pathway

Paving Stones and Other Pathway Solutions and Considerations

It’s that time of year again – the weather is getting warmer, you’re spending more time outside and you’re probably noticing things about your home’s landscape that you want to start upgrading to enhance its visual appeal.

The first area(s) many homeowners look to enhance on their home is their front walkway, driveway and/or back patio/pool area. These areas are the most visible or where the most time is spent. Many homeowners who have basic asphalt driveways or concrete walkways or patios look to switch to pavers, which consist of individual stones made of concrete, natural stone, clay brick or porcelain, that are small pieces and vary in size. Homeowners have choices of various colors, textures and patterns, which is part of what make pavers so appealing. If you are thinking of upgrading your driveway, walkway and/or patio to pavers, here are five things to consider when investing in a paver pathway:

1.)    The right stones, for the right space: You want to make sure you consider the right stones for the right location. For example, if you’re looking to put paving stones around your pool area, you want to ensure that you look for stones that are specifically designed for hardscape solutions such as pool coping edging and curbs, as opposed to the stones that are designed more for walkways and driveways.

2.)    Durability: Part of the reason we work with Cambridge Pavingstones is because every stone has ArmorTec®, a unique mix design used only by Cambridge that is stronger than poured and stenciled concrete and maintains the stone’s true integrity. It is also skid and slip resistant (unlike stamped concrete), which is particularly important if you’re installing stones around your patio and/or pool area. When you’re choosing your pavers for walkway, driveway or patio/pool area, you want to ensure that you’re choosing stones that will last (giving you a better return on your investment), and that they will be safe for you and your guests to walk on (not slippery when wet).

3.)    Design/Style: When upgrading your driveway, walkway or patio, you want to make sure you choose the right product for your space, that works with your design aesthetic. For example, if you have a mid-century modern look, you would not want to want a Mediterranean, historic design. You want to ensure that your landscape matches your existing style so that it doesn’t clash with your space.

4.)    Needs: This is extremely important. If you’re installing pavers on your driveway and you tend to get some water buildup, you may need a solution to get rid of stormwater. Before you even start the design process, you should start thinking about how to fix this problem. You don’t want to be left out to dry (pun intended).

5.)    Pattern and Finish: Similar to design and style, it’s important to decide on the type of pattern and finish in advance, as there are so many options to choose from. You want to ensure that the pattern and finish of your paver stones go hand-in-hand with the design and style that you choose, and that they work with the aesthetic of your home and landscaping.

There are so many factors to consider when investing in a paver pathway. While it may seem overwhelming, we are here to help!
